“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10
Atlanta was super cloudy when I was flying out last week. All I could see through the window other than the wing of the plane, was white. We couldn’t see our surroundings, anything beneath us or where we were heading. The clouds actually caused so much turbulence it made our stomachs drop a few times and people really started freaking out for a minute because it felt like we were falling.
I watched people as they grabbed onto something to try to stabilize themselves and when I took my headphones out, I realized some were even yelling. I will admit that not being in control in that moment was scary. Not being able to see anything or where the plane was headed made that a little scarier.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I do know many people struggle with anxiety and fear not being in control. In that moment I thought “okay, what if I actually was in control? What if I was flying this plane right now and had complete control?”. I realized that would be even scarier because I don’t know the first thing about operating a plane! So immediately I had complete trust in the more qualified pilot (and God) and was at ease.
God tells us to have complete trust in Him for a reason. Sometimes we’re not qualified to have control over certain situations in our life so we need to trust who IS in control which is God. Sometimes you won’t be able to see even a glimpse of where you’re heading which can be scary, but that’s exactly where the trust comes in.
I trusted that the turbulence would end and we would get to our destination safely. The end of the plane ride was so smooth and beautiful! We got to see the sunset over Chicago from above the Lake Michigan which made it all worth it.
Next time you’re in a situation where you’re anxious about not being in control, ask yourself “what if I was in control right now?”. I hope that you remember to remind yourself that it would be even scarier if you were in complete control over the things that is best when God is in control.
If you’re in a turbulent phase in your journey, I can assure you that even when you can’t see anything, God will let you know He’s there. Even on my plane ride he was telling me “HOWDY! I’m right here. There is nothing to fear.”
Thank you for always protecting me from the things I see and especially the things I cannot. I am blessed to have you in complete control over my life. Even when I can't see everything going on, I put my full trust in you.
